On a day of drama for some of the title contenders, Ryan Jenkinson, Jake Hewlett and David Lawrence became winners for the first time in the Racing Hondas Championship at Oulton Park.

Jenkinson took the outright victory in the second of two races around Oulton’s full-length International circuit after runaway leaders Liam Collins and Dan Brown both sensationally retired from the lead.

Collins, winner of race 1 ahead of Brown, stopped with fuel pump failure on his supercharged Integra DC2. Then, on the penultimate lap, Brown, with an 18-seconds lead over Jenkinson, also pulled up with a throttle issue on his Civic Bali.

Jenkinson, at the time running an untroubled second, suddenly found himself leading and from there he was able to cruise to the win in his Ben Sharpe Racing Civic FN2.

“I kept hearing all sorts of noises from the car on that final lap – all probably in my head!” said Jenkinson, who’d earlier finished third in race 1.

“You could say I inherited the win with Liam and Dan both dropping out, but you have to make sure you’re in a position to take advantage if there are dramas like that.

“It’s an amazing feeling to win in Racing Hondas with all the big crowds the championship races in front of.”

Behind, there was a first podium result of the season, in second, for Will Murfin in his Civic EK and a first-ever top-three result in third for Kevin Talbot (Integra DC5). Talbot’s result (seventh outright from 30th on the grid) was reward for his small team having repaired his car just in time to make the start after he’d pranged it in the day’s earlier race.

Hewlett’s win in Class B came in race 2, just ahead of the ever-present Dave Buky (Kinetic Civic EP3) who’d beaten him to take the win in race 1.

It marked a fine debut performance in the championship for Hewlett aboard his Europa Crash Centre/BSR Civic EP3.

Notably, Hewlett’s ‘guesting’ appearance meant he was ineligible to score so his points were collected instead by Alfie Jeakins (third in class in both races) who remains on top in the B standings.

Lawrence’s victory signalled a rare defeat in Class C for points leader Ryan Cunningham.

The Civic FN2 driver had started race 1 from the class pole and went unchallenged throughout, but in race 2 had to give second best to Cunningham (EP3) who got back to winning ways with his eighth victory in the division from 10 rounds – a result which moves him further clear in the outright points standings ahead of Brown and Collins. Elsewhere, Spencer Fortag (FN2) continued his strong run with a pair of third places in class.

There were other impressive performances, both on and off the track.

In Class B, Paul Taylor (Civic EP3) and Chris Coomer (Civic EG) both proved rapid on their championship debuts.

Tyler Shannon’s small crew and, single-handedly, Luke Harvey overcame adversity to fix their cars (Integra DC5 and Civic EK respectively) in time for race 2. In a cruel twist, both would be eliminated from the race when their cars collided exiting Old Hall Corner, Harvey having come through from 33rd on the grid!

One also had to feel for Sam Linssner. Hasty repairs to his Civic EP3 after it had shed a wheel in qualifying meant he could start race 1 from second in class and a podium result looked likely until the penultimate corner when he crashed out with brake failure.
